John L. Valentine
John L. Valentine is a partner of Howard, Lewis & Petersen and has been employed with the firm since 1976. John’s practice areas include federal and estate taxation, estate planning, contract, and business law.
Born in Fullerton, California, John received his Bachelor of Science in accounting and economics in 1973 and his Juris Doctor in 1976, both from Brigham Young University.
A seasoned estate attorney, he has received an "AV" rating in Martindale-Hubble and is a Fellow in the American College of Trusts and Estate Counsel. Among his many awards, accomplishments and certificates, John was awarded the Tax Practitioner of the Year award by the Utah State Bar in 2008. John has also served as an adjunct professor of law at Brigham Young University and is a certified mediator with Utah Dispute Resolution.
John is also actively involved in public service. He has served in the Utah Legislature since 1988, first as a member of the Utah House of Representatives, and presently as a Utah State Senator. From 2007-2009, he served as president of the Utah State Senate. In addition, John holds an EMT certification and has been a member of the Utah County Search and Rescue Team for over 25 years. As a member of the Search and Rescue Team, John has participated in countless mountain, cave, and wilderness rescues.
John is married and has six children.
