According to the Federal Highway Administration, driving the wrong way causes 300 to 400 deaths. Wrong-way driving is when a person travels in the opposite direction that is designated for that road. While wrong-way driving only contributes to about 3 percent of car accidents, these accidents are more likely to result in death than other types of car accidents.

Wrong-way driving accidents typically cause head-on collisions. Even if the accident does not result in death, it can cause serious injuries. Many people must undergo extensive rehabilitation and therapy in order to recover properly. Head injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib injuries and whiplash are some of the most common injuries caused by wrong-way accidents.

What Contributes to Wrong-way Accidents?

Driver error is the top cause of wrong-way accidents. For example, drivers often enter the exit ramp instead of the entrance ramp. There are several things that can contribute to driver error including lack of signs, drug use, distracted driving and drowsy drivers. Additionally, drivers who have mental health problems are more likely to drive the wrong way.

How to Prevent Wrong-way Driving Accidents

Thirty-one percent of wrong-way driving accidents occur between the hours of midnight and 3 a.m. Fifty-seven percent of these accidents occur on the weekend. You will need to be extra vigilant if you drive during these times. If you see someone driving on the wrong side of the road, then you should try to alert the driver. You can honk your horn or flash the lights. You should also turn your vehicle sideways in order to avoid being hit head-on if you cannot get out of the person’s way.
